How to top up your SMS balance

Add money once, or turn on Auto top-up so your guests keep getting their messages. Money you add never expires.

Table of contents:

Two ways to top up

  • Auto top-up (recommended): when your allowance and balance run out, we add a set amount and keep sending, up to a monthly limit you choose.

  • Add money: a one-off top-up, any time, even while you still have plan allowance left.

Both charge the payment method already on your account, so there's nothing else to enter.

No card on your account yet (for example on the Free plan)? Click Add payment method. It's on the SMS page, in the top-up windows and on your Billing page. It opens a secure Stripe page where you add your card, then brings you back to Touch Stay.

Set up Auto top-up

  1. Open your SMS page: Messaging & Chat → SMS Usage (legacy Hub: Message Hub → SMS Usage).

  2. Click Auto top-up settings.

  3. Switch Auto top-up on.

  4. Under When my balance runs out, charge me, enter a whole amount (minimum 1.00 in your currency), or click Use suggested. You'll see roughly how many messages it buys.

  5. Under Never charge me more than, enter your limit per cycle. It can't be lower than one top-up. You'll see how many top-ups it allows: for example, 1 per top-up with a limit of 10 allows up to 10 top-ups per cycle.

  6. Click Save.

Your SMS page and Billing page then show Auto top-up on in green, with your amount and your limit per cycle.

  • Suggested amount: about half of what you spent on SMS in the last 30 days, rounded up to a whole amount. With no recent sending, it suggests 10.

  • When it charges: only once your plan allowance and balance have both run out, never while allowance is left. If a message costs more than what's left, it's still sent, your balance goes to zero and Auto top-up adds money straight away.

  • The monthly limit: the most Auto top-up can charge you in one billing cycle. Your plan allowance doesn't count towards it. If you reach it, sending pauses until you raise the limit or add money. When you raise the limit, Auto top-up tries again straight away, and sending resumes as soon as that payment goes through.

  • Receipt: after every automatic top-up you get a receipt email.

Add money once

  1. Open your SMS page: Messaging & Chat → SMS Usage (legacy Hub: Message Hub → SMS Usage).

  2. Click Add money.

  3. Enter a whole amount in your currency, minimum 1. The approximate number of messages it buys updates as you type (rounded down).

  4. Click Add money.

The money goes into your balance and appears under Top-ups on your Billing page. If the payment is still processing, it's added as soon as it's paid.

Turn Auto top-up off

On your Billing page, click Turn off next to Auto top-up. Or open Auto top-up settings, switch it off and click Save. Your balance stays exactly as it is. With Auto top-up off, sending pauses when your balance runs out.

Questions & Answers

Can I add an amount with cents, like 2.50?

No. Top-ups are whole amounts, from 1 upwards.

Does money I add expire?

No, never.

Where do I see what I've paid?

On your Billing page, under Top-ups. Each top-up is charged as its own one-time payment. See Invoices & Card Payment details.

My card was declined. What now?

Update your card on your Billing page under Manage Subscription → Change billing details, then add money again. See Invoices & Card Payment details.

I pay by invoice. Can I use Auto top-up?

No. Auto top-up charges the card on file, so it isn't available for accounts paid by invoice.
